Conversely, rely solely on the lookout’s instinct, and you are adrift in a sea of noise. Without the lighthouse’s steady rhythm to establish a baseline of normalcy, every ripple looks like a tidal wave. Is that elevated latency a prelude to collapse or just Tuesday morning in Europe? The lighthouse provides the essential heartbeat; without it, the lookout has no foundation for his intuition. The lighthouse defines the edges of the known world so the lookout can devote his attention to its murky periphery.

The most resilient watch is not a choice between one or the other, but a conscious orchestration of both. It is the lighthouse keeper who also trains his eyes on the dark gaps between his beams.
