These "sleeping" components are the perennials of our system. We deploy them, they serve their initial purpose, and then they enter a state of low activity. Perhaps it’s a legacy API endpoint that only one ancient, forgotten batch job calls on the first of the month. Maybe it's a caching layer that hums along quietly until a holiday sale surges traffic in a way we didn't anticipate. In the busyness of tending to the daily blooms—the user-facing applications, the core databases—we can forget to check the root-hardiness of these background elements. Our health checks might ping them, and they might respond with a simple 200 OK, but are we checking if their connection pools are stale? Are we monitoring if their internal logic has become brittle with age?
