The Ferryman's Unstable River: On the Currents Beneath the Calm Surface
I was seventeen, working a summer job at a small provincial ferry crossing. The boat was a grumbling, diesel-scented thing, and my job was to tie the lines, collect the toll, and wave the cars on and off. The schedule was printed on a sun-bleached placard: every twenty minutes, on the hour. For tourists, this was the very picture of reliability. They’d consult the sign, check their watches, and smile at the predictability of it all. My dashboard, such as it was, consisted of the old engine’s sound, the smell of its exhaust, and the feel of the ropes in my hands. Green light. All systems go.
Until the day the river itself changed. There had been storms far upstream, a fact invisible to anyone at our sleepy dock. The water, which usually slid by with a quiet, oily swirl, was running high and fast, carrying a secret cargo of submerged logs and churning silt. To the passengers waiting in their cars, nothing was amiss. The schedule said 2:00 PM, and it was 2:00 PM. The boat was at the dock. The engine started. The green light was on.
But the moment we pushed off, the current grabbed us like a hand. The crossing, normally a straight, placid line, became a desperate, groaning diagonal. The captain fought the wheel, the engine note climbing from a grumble to a scream. My job shifted in an instant from routine to vigilance—not watching the clock, but watching the water ahead for the dark shape of a snag, feeling the deck vibrate with a new and alarming frequency, judging the angle of our approach to the far slip, which now seemed impossibly small. The dashboard metrics were all nominal, but the service was on the brink of failure. We made it, but just barely, and twenty minutes became forty-five.
I think of that ferry now when I look at a monitoring screen full of green checks. Our health checks are the printed schedule and the engine’s start-up roar. They tell us the component is alive and at its post. But they are deaf to the changing currents of the system—the sudden flood of misrouted traffic from a peer’s failure, the accumulating latency of a misbehaving cache, the slow silting-up of a database connection pool. The surface endpoint responds with a 200 OK, while beneath it, the currents are pulling the entire operation off course.
Observability, then, is not the schedule or the start-up check. It is the river gauge upstream. It is the sonar pinging for submerged timber. It is the strain sensor on the tow cable and the captain’s muttered curse about the rudder response. It is the collection of indirect, often analog feelings that tell you the context of your operation has fundamentally shifted, even if the primary instrument still reads ‘nominal.’
Reliability isn’t just about the boat making its scheduled departure; it’s about the boat arriving at the correct dock, intact, despite the river’s new and contrary will. We must build our senses not just for the state of the vessel, but for the state of the water it sails in. Because the river never cares about the schedule. It has its own rhythms, and it only tells its secrets to those who know to look beyond the calm of the surface.
