We might tune a service to shave milliseconds off a synthetic test performed from a major cloud region, all while a subtle routing issue introduces seconds of latency for a entire geographic region of real users. We optimized for the instrument, not for the true vertical. Elias would never mistake his spirit level for the absolute truth of gravity; we must not mistake our synthetic ping for the truth of user experience.
