The Cartographer's Unpeopled City: On the Topography of Idle Systems

What is the true shape of the architecture when the streets are empty, when the servers are not serving, when the only sound is the cooling fan’s sigh and the whisper of a background thread? This is the map we rarely draw: the topography of an idle system.

It is a peculiar kind of observance, to watch a thing that is not doing what it was built to do. Our health checks are often impatient things, pounding on the door to see if anyone is awake.
