These are the perils of perpetual uptime. The system is ‘up’, by every standard check, yet it is imperceptibly drifting off course.

In winter, a crack in the foundation announces itself with a draft. In this digital summer, the foundation can slowly turn to sand without a whisper. We’ve built lighthouses for the rocky coasts, but who is watching for the coral reefs that grow silently just below the surface of a placid sea?

The Value of a Cloud

Paradoxically, a brief, controlled failure can be the most valuable event in a long season of stability. It is the cloud that obscures the sun, reminding the navigator to check his instruments.
