We are tempted to fill every blank space on the map, to instrument every possible metric until our dashboards glow with a dizzying array of data points. We believe a complete map is a reliable one.
But the wisest engineers I know are like those old mapmakers. They understand the profound value of the spare line. They recognize that not every internal process needs a public health check, and not every metric needs to trigger a page at two in the morning. The question becomes: where do we draw the line between what we vigilantly monitor and what we deliberately leave un-watched?
The Integrity of the Unmeasured
Creating an ‘unmonitored’ zone isn't an act of negligence. It is an act of focus. Every alert we configure carries a cognitive load. When we set a threshold for a non-critical subsystem, we add a new star to our personal sky, another point of potential distraction. Soon, we are navigating by a firmament cluttered with false constellations, chasing phantom issues while the true navigational hazards go unnoticed. The spare line protects the signal from the noise.
More importantly, it defines the edges of our responsibility. A service’s public API endpoint must be monitored with ruthless precision; its uptime and latency are the coastlines on the user’s map. Its failures should be caught by other, broader measures of system health, or by internal logs consulted only when a deeper investigation is warranted. By not exposing its every tremor to the alerting system, we acknowledge that some turbulence is part of the normal voyage, not a sign of imminent shipwreck.
This discipline forces a crucial clarification of purpose. Before drawing a monitor, we must ask: ‘Who acts on this information, and what is the specific action they will take?’ If the answer is vague or the action is merely ‘to be aware,’ we are likely charting a phantom territory. We are adding detail for detail’s sake, which can make a map less usable, not more. The goal is not a perfect representation of every cog and gear, but a reliable guide for navigating the service from point A to point B.
So, the next time you are sketching the observability map for a system, take a moment to appreciate the empty spaces. Consider the strategic value of the line you do not draw. A well-placed ‘Pagus Ignatus’ is a sign of a mature and thoughtful craft. It confesses the limits of our watchfulness not as a weakness, but as the very thing that makes the rest of the map trustworthy.
