But what about the 43,200 consecutive successes that preceded it? They were signals, too. They were the rhythm of normalcy, the baseline pulse. Their silent, consistent return was information—affirmation that the world was as it should be. Yet, because we only truly ‘listen’ for the dissonance, we miss the music of the system’s sustained health.
This creates a subtle blindness. We become attuned to catastrophe but numb to the slow drift. A latency increase of 5 milliseconds per day across a week is a 35ms creep. Individually, each check is ‘green.’ Collectively, they sketch a line heading toward a threshold. Without a process to acknowledge the positive signal—to routinely confirm, “yes, the rhythm is still good and here is its pattern”—we grant ourselves permission to ignore the orchestra until someone plays a wrong note.
The remedy isn’t more alerts; that’s just more noise. It is the deliberate, if minimalist, act of acknowledgment. It could be a weekly report that doesn’t just list incidents, but highlights a key service’s consistent 99.99% uptime, forcing a moment of gratitude and review. It could be a dashboard that displays the longest-running ‘perfect’ health check streak, making the silent work visible. It is the equivalent of looking into the dish every morning, touching the wallet, and confirming its presence before you assume it. You are conducting the check, not just receiving it.
My ceramic dish hasn’t changed. But my habit has. Now, when I drop my things in, I pause for a half-second. I register the weight of the wallet, the shape of the keys. It is a tiny, deliberate acknowledgment of a system functioning.
