But without first knowing, with absolute certainty, that our core service is ‘centered’—that it responds to a simple health check with unwavering consistency, that its heartbeat is regular and strong under no load—we are building on a wobble. That initial, perfect ‘ping’ is the potter’s test. A service that cannot reliably pass its most basic self-check is a service that is already off-center, and any complexity layered atop it will only amplify its inherent instability.

The potter’s hand doesn’t vanish after centering; it remains, a steadying presence, constantly feeling for the slightest tremor. So too must our monitoring. Our health checks are not a one-time ritual performed in the sterile quiet of a staging environment.
