It is the stillness of a pond whose surface is flawless, while anoxia claims everything beneath.
The true sign of a living, reliable system is not stillness, but the right kind of noise. It is the gentle sawtooth wave of cache hit ratios, the rhythmic pulse of garbage collection, the predictable ebb and flow of request queues that empty as fast as they fill. It is the watchmaker’s hand in motion, the slight, corrective adjustments, the occasional cleaning of a gear.
